Biography

She was born in Lomié and studied in Douala before moving to Toulouse, France, to learn nursing. She returned to Cameroon in 1960 and worked as a nurse in several hospitals. In 1964, she became the national president of the Council of Cameroonian Women. From 1970 to 1975, she worked as Vice Minister for Health and Public Welfare. From 1975 to 1984, she served as Minister for Social Affairs in Cameroon.

She led the administrative council of the United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women. She also led the Comité Régional Africain de Coordination pour l’Intégration des Femmes au Développement and was vice-president of the International Council of Women. She was honored with the French National Order of Merit.

In 1983, she wrote her first novel, Vies de Femmes (Women's Lives). The next year, she wrote L'Oiseau en cage (The Caged Bird). Through her writing, she used stories to support women's rights and helped more women be heard in Cameroon and across Africa. Her work as a politician and writer shows her dedication to helping women and improving society. She died on July 16, 2020, in Yaoundé at the age of 84. Her death ended a long and meaningful career, but her work in politics, literature, and women's rights continues to inspire many Cameroonian women. She is remembered as someone who helped women take leadership roles and used her writing to challenge unfair ideas.
