On April 13, 2003, a fire broke out at a home in the University District of Columbus, Ohio. The fire resulted in the deaths of five university students, including two from Ohio State University and three from Ohio University. Even though someone was arrested early on, the case has not been solved yet.

Events

Before the fire, a party was held at a house where 12 Ohio State University students lived to celebrate the 21st birthday of student Alan Schlessman. About 200 people attended the party, and 16 remained after it ended. At some point during the night, a fire started at the front door of the house. Eight students escaped on their own, while three others were rescued by firefighters through the back door when they arrived at 4:05. All five victims were found on the second floor of the house and had died from carbon monoxide poisoning and smoke inhalation.

Suspect

Robert Patterson, a person without a permanent home and with a previous criminal record, was arrested four months after the fire. Police investigators said Patterson admitted to being involved in the crime. However, the prosecutor decided not to charge him because there was not enough evidence.
