This list includes airplanes that have disappeared and whose locations are unknown. According to Annex 13 of the International Civil Aviation Organization, an airplane is considered missing "when official searches have ended and the wreckage has not been found." However, there is still an unclear part about how much wreckage must be found for a plane to be declared "recovered." This list does not include every pilot or every passenger who has gone missing, as these are separate categories.

In the tables below, each missing airplane is described (in the Aircraft column) using one or more details. If the airplane had a special name (such as Pathfinder), that name is listed first (in italics), followed by the airplane type (in parentheses). The airplane's manufacturer is also included when available. Airplane registrations, which began in the early 1900s for identification, are also listed in the later tables (in parentheses).

20th century

On November 5, 2009, Clayton Kuhles of miarecoveries.org said he found the wreckage near Birmani Kami. However, when investigators checked the site in 2013, they discovered it was actually the wreckage of a Convair 240 AP-AEG, which had crashed on March 14, 1953. In January 2012, the Indian paramilitary group Assam Rifles said they found the wreckage after four months of searching, but no further details about this discovery were shared. A military transport plane carrying 10 crew members and 57 passengers went missing.
