Shell Beach released their first album, Acronycal, in 2007 through Edge Records. The first new song from their next album, titled "The Greatest Skeptic," was shared online on the band's website in September 2011. Their expected second album, This Is Desolation, was released in 2012.
History
Shell Beach was formed in 2006 by long-time friends. The band’s name was inspired by a place from the movie Dark City that is hard to reach. Each member had previously played in bands from the Budapest underground music scene, including Daniel Ivanfi (Blind Myself), Matyas Mohacsi (The Idoru), Zoltan Totik (Velvet Stab), Pal Somlo (Buried By Time), and Attila Horváth (Subscribe). They decided to start a band together. The post-hardcore and alternative music group grew quickly in the years that followed. They used a demo and online presence to start touring. Their first album, titled Acronycal, was released in 2007. The music on Acronycal ranged from intense, chaotic sounds to calm, dreamlike moments. It reflected the challenges of daily life and the search for happiness. The 10 songs showed the band’s respect for their musical influences, including artists like Glassjaw, the Deftones, and Refused. The first music video for the song “Are We OK?” was shown on MTV in 2008.
Touring helped the band improve their sound over the next few years. After a change in the band’s members, Viktor Sági became the new guitarist. He had previously worked with vocalist Zoltan in their earlier band, Velvet Stab. In 2010, the band began working on their second album. The first single, The Greatest Skeptic, was released online in 2011. The second single, Hirudinean, came out in 2012.
This Is Desolation, the band’s second album, was released in November 2012. The 11-song record took two years to create and includes 88 tracks. It features guest vocalists Matt Geise (from Lower Definition and Dance Gavin Dance) and Zeek. Tamas Somlo played the clarinet on track #9. The album helped Shell Beach become one of the most well-known bands in the Hungarian and Budapest post-hardcore scenes. It was recorded at Pannonia Studios and mixed and mastered by Dávid Schram.
The first music video from the album, Vital Signs, was released in November 2012. It was shown on MTV Hungary and VIVA Hungary.
In late September, Shell Beach announced their first European mini-tour with The Southern Oracle and Stubborn. They performed in cities like Bratislava, Košice, Kraków, Opava, Hengelo, Zwijndrecht, Plochingen, Zürich, Frankfurt, and Prague.
In 2014, the band played at the Belgian GROEZROCK festival and toured with Enter Shikari and Roam.
In early 2016, the band released a digital-only EP called Changes X Restless X Faithless. It includes five songs.
In May 2018, the band announced an EU tour with Adam Kills Eve and major changes in the group, including a new drummer, a new vocalist, and the return of Viktor Sági on guitars. They also announced that founding member Attila Horváth would help produce and write songs. He performed with the band at some concerts. In July 2021, Shell Beach released their newest single and music video, Hero.
