Steve Murray was born on October 9, 1944. He was a Scottish football player who played as a midfielder. Most of his career took place in the north-east part of Scotland, where he played for Dundee and Aberdeen. He also had success while playing for a team in Glasgow called Celtic and played for the Scottish national team once. Later in his life, he became a manager for Forfar Athletic and Montrose.
Playing career
Murray started his career in the early 1960s with Dundee, playing for six years at Dens Park. He earned runner-up medals in both domestic cup competitions and made about 200 appearances in total.
In 1970, Murray became Aberdeen’s record signing in a £50,000 deal. He missed the 1970 Scottish Cup final because he was unable to play due to prior commitments but played once for the Scotland national team in 1971. That match took place at Pittodrie. After Martin Buchan left for Manchester United, Murray became the team’s captain.
In May 1973, Murray moved to Celtic in a £55,000 deal after a disagreement about his contract. During his two years at Celtic Park, he won all three domestic competitions. He retired in early 1976 because of a toe injury.
In 1979, Murray joined Dundee United as a scout. After receiving acupuncture treatment, he returned to playing and made three league appearances. He also played as a substitute in the first game of the Scottish League Cup final that season.
Management
In 1980, Murray started his managerial career with Forfar Athletic but left after one training session and three days. He returned to management two years later with Montrose but left to work in banking.
Murray then returned to his former club, Dundee United, as assistant manager in July 1989. However, he had a disagreement with the manager, Jim McLean, who was a teammate in the 1967 Scottish League Cup final. Murray left before the end of the year and later won a large amount of money in a court case.
Family
Murray, whose son Chris played for Dundee United, Celtic, and had coaching roles at Dundee and Brechin City, has retired from banking and now focuses on painting.
