Bastetani

Date

The Bastetani or Bastuli were an ancient group of people who lived in the Iberian Peninsula before the Romans arrived. They are believed to have spoken the Iberian language. It is not completely understood how closely related the Bastetani were to the Tartessian Mastieni, another group that lived in an area called Mastia on the southeastern coast of the peninsula.

The land of the Bastetani, called Bastetania, covered parts of the southeastern Iberian Peninsula. This area includes parts of modern-day southern Albacete, Almería, Granada, eastern Málaga, southeastern Jaén, and western Murcia. Their main towns were located between Baria (now known as Villaricos) and Bailo (in Cádiz), as well as places such as Malaka, Abdera, Sexi, and Carteia. Their capital was likely the city called Basti by the Romans, which is now known as Baza. A famous sculpture called the Lady of Baza was discovered in the burial site of Basti in 1971.
