Calanais (also called Callanish) is a village located on the western side of the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. It is part of the parish of Uig. The village is built along a narrow headland that extends into Loch Roag, a sea loch 13 miles (21 kilometers) west of Stornoway. Calanais lies next to the A858 road, between the places called Breasclete and Garynahine.
The Calanais Stones, known as "Calanais I," are a group of standing stones arranged in a cross shape. These stones were built around 3000 BC and are among the most impressive large stone structures in Scotland. A visitor center nearby offers information about the main stone circle and other smaller monuments in the area, which are labeled Calanais II through Calanais X.
