Gergovia was the main town (called an oppidum) of the Arverni and the site of the Battle of Gergovia in 52 BC. The battle was fought between a Roman army, led by Julius Caesar, and Gallic forces, led by Vercingetorix. Caesar traveled south with six legions to attack the hill town of Gergovia. The Gauls won the battle, which increased support for Vercingetorix’s military efforts in future fights. This was a major loss for Caesar and the Roman army in Gaul.
